Description: Inspired by the people and colors of the largest market in Accra, in the Ga region of Ghana, Grand Rapids’ sister city in West Africa. This mixed media origami collage incorporates Ghanaian wax-print and batik fabrics with papers of the world.
This is a scene of set-up time at Accra’s largest market, which is miles long and a center of commerce for primarily women-owned businesses. Shown here are eight saleswomen (and one baby on back)l wearing Ghanaian fabrics. Goods being sold at the market and shown here include: Ghanaian wax-print and batik fabrics, a sewing shop for clothes made to order, water purification buckets, flour sold by the canful (as in large or small tin soup can), bottles of beauty products, aluminum bowls, toys, pork, snails, seafood, eggplant, green beans, melons, mangos, tomatoes, onions, corn on the cob, squash and various potatoes. The birds flying are a “bishop bird” (with a white collar) and seagulls. The trees are palm trees.
Materials: Invented origami and ori-kimono -- folded paper and folded fabric. Papers from Japan plus other handmade papers from around the world, hand-dyed cotton batiks and wax-print fabrics from Ghana, Japanese kimono silk.
